At its core, Grade Guardian was created to help identify at-risk students in the classroom. That will be helpful for all faculty and it also allows us to create groups (dashboards) of students we want to monitor. Examples include advisory groups, dorm groups and individual grade levels for form deans. We can create dashboards for just about any student group that you want to monitor (teams, clubs, affinity groups). Additionally, each course has a dashboard to monitor student performance specific to your class.
Grade Guardian resides within Canvas. Begin by logging into Canvas first.
To access Grade Guardian at the course level:
When you are on a course page, locate the Grade Guardian link on the left navigation and select it.
You are now on your course dashboard.
Click on any student to see their Course card:
Click on any grade and you will be brought to that student's grade book. Click on the course name to be brought to the course page. Note - this student is a freshman so all their classes use the learning mastery grade book, so they don't have a grade. Click on the mastery tab to see more details from the LMG.
The contacts tab will list each teacher. The allies section listed the student's advisors.
If there are zeros or missing assignments, you can click on that for a quick pop-up for what is missing.
To access Grade Guardian as an advisor or to see your dashboards:
Because of the Canvas structure, you find your dashboards with a slightly different route:
Locate the Admin shield on the left navigation and select it << Pomfret School
Select Grade Guardian from the navigation (you can ignore the other options)
You will now see the students that you are attached to in the Student list. Based on the Grade Guardian algorithm, you might find students in the at-risk category that are in red or yellow.
Click on a student to see the same student card that you saw in your course.
Select the Dashboards drop down list to see the dashboards that I have created for you. You now have that group displayed.
Some considerations:
Grade Guardian updates once per day and it happens overnight. Grade changes are not reflected until the next day.
Course rosters are dynamic and changes in Sundial / Canvas will be reflected the next day.
Dashboards are not dynamic. If there is an advisor or dorm change, we have to do this manually. Please let us know if you have a change and I will update the dashboard.
Until we have significant grade data entered, the at-risk designation is less useful. Over time this will be significantly more impactful.
Students and parents DO NOT see Grade Guardian. It is only faculty-facing.
Grade Guardian has a very useful Notes tool. To start, we are not going to implement this but we will evaluate and reconsider as we learn the process.
If there is a dashboard that you would like, please put in a support ticket.
When you click on a grade or a course it opens in a new tab. I find myself having to manage and close tabs as I review students.
The learning mastery gradebook is relatively new to Grade Guardian and they are anxious to hear our feedback.
I hope that you find this to be a useful tool to monitor student academic performance. Please provide any feedback that you have about the product and how it's working for you.
